Product description:

  • Amoxicillin is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
  • This medicine is a penicillin-type antibiotic.
  • It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
  • That is, it only treats diseases caused by bacteria.
  • It will not work with viral infections (such as colds and flu).
  • Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can render it ineffective for future infections.
  • Amoxicillin is also used with other medications to treat stomach/intestinal ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori bacteria and to prevent the ulcer from recurring.

Usage guidelines:

Mild to moderate infections:

Less than 3 months:

  • <30 mg/kg/day PO divided every 12 hours for 48-72 hours; more than 10 days for pyogenic bacteriuria infection

Over 3 months and under 40 kg:

  • 25 mg/kg/day PO divided every 12 hours or 20 mg/kg/day PO divided every 8 hours

Over 40 kg:

  • 500 mg PO every 12 hours or 250 mg PO every 8 hours for 10-14 days

Severe infections:

Less than 3 months:

  • <30 mg/kg/day PO divided every 12 hours for 48-72 hours; more than 10 days for pyogenic bacteriuria infection

Over 3 months and under 40 kg:

  • 45 mg/kg/day PO divided every 12 hours or 40 mg/kg/day PO divided every 8 hours
  • Over 40 kg: 875 mg of PO every 12 hours or 500 mg of PO every 8 hours for 10-14 days

Acute otitis media:

Over 3 months and under 40 kg:

  • 80 mg/kg/day PO divided into quarters over 8-12 hours.

Over 40 kg:

  • 500 mg PO every 12 hours or 250 mg PO every 8 hours for 10-14 days.

Lower respiratory tract infections:

  • Mild, moderate, or severe infections

Less than 3 months:

  • <30 mg/kg/day PO divided every 12 hours for 48-72 hours; more than 10 days for pyogenic bacteriuria infection

Over 3 months and under 40 kg:

  • 45 mg/kg/day PO divided every 12 hours or 40 mg/kg/day PO divided every 8 hours

Over 40 kg:

  • 875 mg PO every 12 hours or 500 mg PO every 8 hours for 10-14 days
  • Shake the bottle well before each dose.
  • Measure the dose carefully using a special measuring device/spoon.
  • Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose.
  • Take this medicine by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually every 8 or 12 hours.
  • The dosage depends on your medical condition and response to treatment.
  • You can add the measured dose to formula, milk, juice, water, or ginger ale just before use.
  • Drink the entire mixture to get the full dose. Do not mix ahead of time for future use.
  • Drink plenty of fluids while using this medicine unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
  • For best results, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times.
  • Tell your doctor if the condition persists or worsens.

Warnings and precautions:

  • Before taking amoxicillin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to amoxicillin, penicillin, or cephalosporin antibiotics; or if you have any other allergies.
  • This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.
  • For more information, talk to your pharmacist.
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially about:
  • kidney disease
  • A specific type of viral infection (infectious mononucleosis)
  • Amoxicillin suspension may contain sugar.
  • Caution is advised if you suffer from diabetes or any other condition that requires you to limit/avoid sugar in your diet.
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist about using this product safely.
  • Amoxicillin may interfere with the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines (such as the typhoid vaccine). Do not receive any immunizations/vaccinations while using this medication unless instructed by your doctor.
  • Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).
  • During pregnancy, this medication should only be used when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • Amoxicillin passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
